Garth has deep roots on Manitoulin Island, and although a seasonal resident now, still has family living here. This was combined with growing up as a "Tobacco Lake" kid, spending days exploring every nook and cranny, as well as working in his grandmother's business summers, (The Gore Bay Recorder).

His paintings reflect his love of Manitoulin, which is primarily the source of his subject matter.

He travels for inspiration, and paints for enjoyment and relaxation.
